The physics of leverage and why the Guard is the ultimate equaliser.
The average attacker will almost always be larger and stronger than their target. That is an uncomfortable reality. Most martial arts rely on striking, which requires power and mass. If you weigh 60kg, punching a 100kg aggressor is rarely effective. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu takes a completely different approach.
Physics vs. Brute Force
Jiu-Jitsu was specifically designed for the smaller person to defeat the larger person. It is not magic. It is mechanics. We do not try to bench press a heavy opponent off our chest. We use frames, hip movement, and leverage.
By isolating a limb or attacking the neck, we bypass their strength entirely. A 100kg man has the same neck anatomy as a 60kg woman. Once you understand the physics, the size gap closes rapidly.
The Guard: Your Secret Weapon
In a street altercation, you might end up on your back. In most fights, this is ‘game over’. In BJJ, this is where we are comfortable. We call it the Guard. It allows you to use your strongest muscles, your legs, to control an attacker and keep them at distance.
More Than Just a Ladies Gym
Many women search for a 'ladies gym' or 'boxercise' hoping to feel safer. While those classes are great for fitness, they often provide a false sense of security regarding self-defence. Hitting pads is fun. Controlling a resisting opponent is a skill.
At Checkmat Orpington, we provide a safe and controlled environment to learn these skills. You will not just get fit. You will walk to your car with your head held high, knowing exactly what you are capable of.
