Why cross-training in Jiu-Jitsu is the ultimate way to sharpen your Newaza.
The connection between Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is deep. They are essentially two branches of the exact same tree. Mitsuyo Maeda brought Judo to Brazil, and the pioneers there adapted it. Today, the sports look different on the surface. Fundamentally, they are solving the exact same problem.
The Ruleset Dictates the Art
Judo focuses heavily on the explosive throw. The goal is to hit the perfect Ippon. Because of modern rulesets, referees will often stand competitors back up if the ground exchange stalls. This means Judo training is usually eighty percent standing and twenty percent Newaza.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu flips that ratio completely. The ground is exactly where the fight begins for us. We spend the vast majority of our time working on submissions, sweeps, and positional control on the mats.
The Perfect Addition to Your Judo
Many traditional martial artists search for Judo classes in Orpington or Bromley. If you already train Judo, you have an incredible base and balance. You know how to grip fight. You know how to take someone down with absolute authority.
But you need an answer if the throw does not end the fight. That is where BJJ steps in. Cross-training at Checkmat Orpington gives you the time and space to explore the ground game. There is no referee calling a quick stand-up here. You get to sharpen your pins and chokes against highly skilled opponents.
Bring Your Gi to the Mats
We have enormous respect for the Judo community. Several of our members hold black belts in both arts. If you want to evolve your Newaza and test your grappling in a different environment, come down to Amigos Gym. Bring your Gi and see how the two arts complement each other perfectly.
